Oregon is the national leader in the use of POLST (Physicians Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment). POLST moves beyond political rhetoric to assure that you get the treatments you want and avoid those you don’t. You will learn how POLST differs from an advanced directive, who should have a POLST and who is not yet ready to have a POLST, and how a POLST form is filled out in partnership with your doctor or health care practitioner.

Despite the widespread availability of contraceptives, birth control methods are used inconsistently or incorrectly and this exposes women to the risk of unintended pregnancy. Reasons for imperfect use include misperceptions about risks and fear of side effects, particularly with hormonal methods. Jeffrey Jensen, MD, MPH, is a physician and women’s health researcher, who is inspired by his patients to develop new contraception methods. Dr. Jensen will talk about next-generation birth control and the race to bring better choices to family planning.

In this two-part event, start by joining South Waterfront Community Relations and OHSU Heart Research Center at Umpqua Bank, Tuesday, January 31, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm to learn about the benefits of walking from Dr. Melissa Novak, M.D. Dr. Novak is a faculty member in the Sports Medicine and Family Medicine departments at Oregon Health & Science University. Walking pedometers will be given out at the presentation.
Then, get your New Years resolutions off to a good start by challenging yourself to use those pedometers, and keep using them! Meet us at South Waterfront Community Relations (address below) on Saturday, February 4 for our Winter Healthy Walk – Hawthorne Bridge to Steel Bridge Loop – rain or shine. Please wear sturdy walking shoes, dress in layers, and bring drinking water. This walk is approximately 5.3 miles and is mostly flat, but does include some stairs at the Hawthorne Bridge. Return to South Waterfront Community Relations after the walk for hot beverages and treats to warm you up!
