The West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District (WMSWCD) provides an array of services to residents of the district, which include conservation planning, invasive species removal, urban garden planning and many other services.
The WMSWCD will visit the South Waterfront to discuss soil testing in our area, how to prepare beds for planting, organic gardening, invasive plants and container gardening. As winter melts away into spring it’s time to begin planning our plots in the South Waterfront Community Garden. Last year the beds filled up quickly, so please be sure to fill out your application and return it to the Community Relations office as early as possible. Garden plot applications are available in each building at the concierge desk. Completed applications and checks can be turned in at the Community Relations office, Atwater Townhome #115, Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Also four members of the Multnomah Chapter of the Master Gardeners group will visit the Garden Meeting on March 16 to speak about starting the new gardens for 2010. They will speak on the following topics: soil, seeds, maintenance and secession. They’ll give a short presentation with plenty of time for questions and answers. This is open to new and returning gardeners. Applications for garden plots available at the event.

Mike Zilis, principal with Walker Macy Landscape Architects, will discuss the environmental and community issues influencing the development of the Master Plan for the South Waterfront Greenway. The series will continue over the next three months featuring different speakers on various topics, including the Greenway and Ross Island. This series takes place at Umpqua Bank.

The SWF Community Garden committee presents winter movie nights. A short film, “City of Cranes,” takes you hundreds of feet above the ground to hear the insights of crane drivers, and see a glimpse of the poetic, mesmerizing world of cranes. It is filmed in London and from the view point of the crane operator.
“Backyard Conversations,” is an investigation of place, space and community was filmed in the South Waterfront by local artist Linda Wysong. It includes interviews with residents of the SWF, cyclists, OHSU employees and the construction workers who offer their insights on the neighborhood and what it’s like to live and work in the SWF.

Over the past three months our South Waterfront Artist in Residence, Craig Hickman, has worked with his students to create, design, and produce fascinating projects here in South Waterfront. Many of you attended Hickman’s opening artist talk where he discussed his “Complex Numbers” project and his students’ “Dog Party” in February.
As Hickman’s residency comes to a close this month, be sure to attend his final presentations. March 10th is Hickman’s closing reception and a second opportunity to view student presentations, as well as Hickman’s own project “Complex Numbers.”

Spring is springing. The sheep want to be liberated from their fleeces. Come to a presentation of “Fleece to Fiber” on March 9. Meriwether resident Joyce Romanski will talk about the selection, preparation, spinning and dyeing of wool fleece, including a demonstration on her Ashford spinning wheel. This is a great opportunity to learn about a lost household craft. All SWF Residents are invited to attend, presentation will be held in the Meriwether East Lounge.
