The Gibbs St.Bridge is moving forward – getting us ever closer to construction!  A bridge type has been selected and the Open House on June 17 at Umpqua Bank in the South Waterfront attracted over 95 people.  Here is the full article:

Dear South Waterfront neighbor,

The Portland Bureau of Transportation’s SW Moody Project will reconstruct SW Moody Avenue from SW River Parkway to SW Gibbs Street. Design is currently underway and construction is anticipated to begin in January 2011.

The improved SW Moody Avenue will include three traffic lanes, dual streetcar tracks, and pedestrian and bicycle facilities. The roadway will be elevated with fill, allowing redevelopers of adjacent brownfields to offer “tuck under parking” without disturbing capped contaminated areas. The elevated street also integrates mixed-use developments with street-level transit facilities, encouraging transit ridership and reducing auto trips.

Notice of Nighttime Work

Next week, a private contractor will be doing work to locate underground utilities on SW Moody Avenue from below the Ross Island Bridge to SW Gibbs Street. The information that will be gathered is critical to the design and construction of the project.

The work will require lane closures on SW Moody Ave during working hours. Flaggers and signage will direct motorists around the work zone. All lanes of SW Moody will be open to traffic outside of the working hours.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has received a noise variance permit from the City’s Noise Control Office to allow this work to occur at night between 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Nighttime work is expected to begin on Sunday evening, August 29th and continue through Friday morning, September 3rd.

Anticipated construction noise includes coring into the existing roadway pavement, removing the materials using a vacuum excavation truck, backfilling and compacting the hole with rock, and restoring the pavement with asphalt. Work at each coring location is expected to take one to two hours and the contractor will be completing work at approximately 20 locations.

PBOT is required to send to the City of Portland Noise Control Officer a complaint report and log details on problem resolution. Elizabeth Caruthers Park is now open! Just over two acres in size, this much awaited new park in the heart of the South Waterfront District is located between SW Moody to the east and SW Bond to the west. A community celebration is planned for August, but you can visit the park now!

Caruthers Park offers visitors an urban garden area, featuring a community gathering area with movable tables and chairs and a built-in bocce court, a garden retreat area with granite seat walls and a historic marker honoring the site of Portland’s first cabin, and an environmental play area with a spray/play stepping stone feature and seating logs.

There is also a naturalized landscaped area, with boardwalks, naturalized plantings, undulating topography with stormwater detention, and Song Cycles public art created by Doug Hollis. In addition, an open lawn area provides space for a variety of use, including an 8′ tall sloped landform for seating, sunning, and play.

Other features of the park include a variety of trees and plantings, pathways with benches, park lighting, a festival edge on Bond, electrical infrastructure for events, bicycle racks, a drinking fountain, dog waste bag dispensers, trash receptacles, and streetscape improvements.

Contractor work on the final touches will be ongoing for the next month or so. The fence around the lawn and landform area may remain up until August 1, as we allow the lawn to establish.

PP&R looks forward to celebrating the opening of the first park in the South Waterfront neighborhood with you this summer. It’s been a long time in the works, but this breathtaking new park will provide a place of respite and recreation, a place for public gatherings and private moments, for generations to come.

A community celebration is scheduled for Thursday, August 19. In the meantime, come down this weekend and check out Portland’s newest park!

The I-5 viaduct that crosses the ravine at SW Iowa Street must be replaced. The viaduct columns are in need of major repairs and do not meet seismic standards. The bridge deck is in poor condition, with cracks appearing faster than they can be patched. The replacement viaduct will be wider to accommodate upgraded shoulders and median and will include new retaining walls in the project area.

A contractor for the Oregon Department of Transportation is preparing to start construction on this project to replace the I-5 viaduct at SW Iowa St. (milepost 298 on I-5, just north of the Terwilliger Boulevard ramps and just south of the Corbett Avenue off-ramp). Construction on the three-year project is expected to begin as early as this summer.

A construction project on I-5 presents unique challenges, especially in areas where easy detours are not available. ODOT has already talked with a number of neighbors about construction impacts. They would like to talk to you, too!

While we are getting better at detecting cancer and cancer therapies have become more effective, prevention remains the best strategy to fight cancer.  Several natural compounds have chemopreventive activities and slow down and prevent many cancers in animals and in humans.  At the same time,  with the increase of obesity in the US, risk of cancer is becoming increasingly high. The saying “you are what you eat” suggests that we may have the tools in our diet to not only prevent cancer but to effectively fight it . The American Cancer Society suggests that we could reduce 30% of all cancers by changing our diet and our lifestyle.

Dr. Philippe Thuillier, Ph.D., received his doctorate from Colorado State University and is currently an Assistant Professor at the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute.  Dr. Thuillier’s lab is focused on the molecular mechanisms by which dietary nutrients can prevent cancer.  They have the unique approach of combining molecular biology and epidemiology to truely assess the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms regulating cancer cell and tumor growth.

We at Community Relations recently received the following letter from Portland Parks & Recreation on the status of the South Waterfront Greenway:

April 22, 2010

What is the Greenway?

The South Waterfront Greenway runs along the west side of the Willamette River, from Lane to Gibbs Streets.   The original Greenway Plan was developed in 2004 by Walker Macy and an Advisory Committee which included OHSU, area developers, city staff and residents.  The Greenway Plan created a long term vision for the Greenway.  Its primary goal was to balance environmental, recreational, fish and wildlife habitat and future resident’s needs. The vision for a developed greenway included enhanced wildlife habitat, vegetation, bike and pedestrian paths, overlooks and lawn areas.

The plan is great but its implementation has been challenging.  Key issues that have delayed development of the project include:

• permitting – habitat and related environmental requirements
• property transfer
• remediation of environmental contamination

While significant progress has been made on these issues, they are not yet fully resolved.

When will the Greenway get built?

In September 2009, we shared with the community that the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) indicated the need for the design to better accommodate fish habitat in the area of the central district.  After much discussion, we asked our consultants, Walker Macy, to develop a design approach that would balance habitat, access, and recreation considerations and meet NMFS requirements.

Following the development of design options to discuss with NMFS, including consideration of a sheet pile approach shared with the public last year, we are still working with Walker Macy to finalize the feasibility and cost of a preferred revised approach.

Once Walker Macy has completed sufficient design and estimating work, we will meet with NMFS with the updated design to proceed with permitting.  In addition to the NMFS permitting process, there is a permit process through the Bureau of Development Services.

This work is taking a long time.  Back in September we indicated that the earliest “in-water” work window was likely 2012.  That remains true, although it is possible that delays may result in construction being pushed back to 2013.

South Waterfront Community Relations and University of Oregon’s Artist in Residence for the spring term, Kart Ucci, is hosting her Professional Practices Lecture Series in South Waterfront. Her third and final speaker is Mark McFarland,who is an interdisciplinary artist and curator from Portland. Mark works in many mediums, with a particular focus on video and drawing. Characterized by humor, mysticism, chance, repetition, and the multi-sensory, his work invites the viewer to experience the intersection of the aesthetic and the cognitive. McFarland has been exhibited nationally and internationally; screening videos at Pixelodeon Festival at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles, the La Enana Marron Film and Video Festival in Madrid, and at Cine Fantom in Moscow. McFarland has also created works for the Portland Institute for Contemporary Arts’ Time-Based Art Festival, and a three-month-long project for the Tacoma Art Museum, which Sheila Farr of the Seattle Times called “startling, nutty, and technologically relevant.”

South Waterfront Community Relations and University of Oregon’s Artist in Residence for the spring term, Kart Ucci, is hosting her Professional Practices Lecture Series in South Waterfront. Her second speaker is Jenene Nagy a visual artist living and working in Portland. She received her BFA from the University of Arizona in 1998 and her MFA from the University of Oregon in 2004. Nagy’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including the Portland Art Museum, Weatherspoon Art Museum, Takt Kunstprojektraum in Berlin, and Dam Stuhltrager in NY, among others. Recent awards include an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Oregon Arts Commission and a three-month residency at Raid Projects in Los Angeles. Along with a rigorous studio practice, Nagy is a full-time faculty member at Clark College and one half of the curatorial team TILT Export. www.jenenenagy.com

Join speaker Kelly Hazen from Burns, Oregon, for a fascinating slide/ video show and talk about the arctic white geese that migrate through Oregon each spring and fall.  Over 200,000 arctic white geese travel through the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge on their way to and from nesting grounds in the arctic.  For thirteen years Kelly has studied and photographed Ross and snow geese as they rest and feed during their northbound migration.  Learn how to identify these two geese species along with their rare blue phase type.  Kelly will explain how to read neck collars and what they tell us about these long distance migrating geese.

This event is sponsored by the South Waterfront Birders Group. Special bird appearances are likely to occur. All participants will receive aerial maps of the South Waterfront area.  Come mingle with fellow bird fanciers and share tales of what we are seeing at SWF.  Light snacks and beverages provided.

Bio:
Cris Moss is a curator and multimedia artist based in Portland, Oregon
Noted for his ongoing series (9+) of itinerant donut shop shows. He is now Adjunct Professor of Design, Electronic Media, and Gallery Director at Linfield College . He is also part of the Red Shoe Delivery Service collective. Most recently Moss curated the Portland 2010 Biennial staged at various venues throughout Portland, Oregon during March-May 2010.

Moss’s work explores the various layers of identity as mediated through culture by employing narratives both scripted and non-scripted. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally, including The Melbourne International Arts Festival, Australia, Nottdance, UK, Display Gallery in Prague, Maccarone Inc. in NYC, Swiss Institute – Contemporary Art, NYC, Elizabeth Leach Gallery Portland, Oregon, Whatcom Art Museum, Bellingham, WA, and Yellowstone Art Museum, Billings, MT.

During the month of May University of Oregon  BFA students will be using the studio to work on various projects for their thesis exhibition which takes place during the month of June at the White Box Gallery located at 24 NW First Avenue.

Matt Nixon is in the process of creating an installation using the studio windows – the piece will be visible by peering through holes or pockets in the windows which will be collaged with images from 1930s/& 40’s newspaper clippings

Chris Oshiro will be building a set in the space to document dog owners with their pets and will be using green screen to document works in progress for his BFA exhibition

Liz Bayan will be workshopping various installation configurations using multiple broadcast monitors in preparation for her BFA exhibition.

Mike Houck, Executive Director of the Urban Greenspaces Institute and Lynn Barlow, Portland Parks and Recreation, will present information on the status of Ross Island restoration and efforts to establish a No Wake Zone on the Holgate Channel and Ross Island Lagoon. Mike will share ideas the Friends of Ross Island have developed in an illustrated “Envisioning Ross Island” presentation developed by the Audubon Society of Portland, Willamette Riverkeeper, Urban Greenspaces Institue and local landscape designers and landscape architects. Mike will recap the ongoing discussion regarding Ross Island Sand and Gravel’s restoration obligations and issues around the No Wake Zone. Lynn Barlow will bring South Waterfront residents up to speed on Portland Parks and Recreation’s ecological restoration efforts and other management issues regarding their 45-acre ownership at Ross Island.

In cooperation with the South Waterfront 20/20 Art, Culture & Science Committee, South Waterfront Community Relations and the University of Oregon are happy to announce the UO/SWF Artist in Residence Program’s spring artist, Kartz Ucci, Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Oregon. Kartz will be living in the John Ross, teaching at the University of Oregon White Stag building and creating in the John Ross Plaza Studio.

Kartz Ucci received her MFA from York University and has been teaching at the University of Oregon since 2004, prior engagements include York University, McMaster University and Ryerson University in Canada. A central metaphor in Kartz’s work is the ‘location of desire’ and the ‘pursuit of happiness.’ Her work is produced with the medium that best conveys its conceptual content and is actualized through light, sound, video, performance, photography and text. Discover Kartz’s work and that of her students during her residency through June 2010 and meet Kartz at her Opening Reception on April 14th or stop by during her open hours every Thursday afternoon.

Art professor Kartz Ucci is taking up residence in Portland for the spring term . . . and so is her artwork. As part of the new Portland 2010 biennial, Ucci’s video installation at the Alpern Gallery in northwest Portland will be on view from April 2 to 24. A reception for the artist happens Friday, April 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. The gallery is located at 2552 N.W. Vaughn St. in Portland. Hours are Fridays, noon to 5 p.m. and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Across town, Ucci will serve as artist-in-residence at the John Ross Condominiums at South Waterfront throughout the spring term. She is also teaching two digital arts classes at the UO’s White Stag Block.

Portland 2010, a successor to the former Oregon Biennial, brings together 18 artists spread out among 6 different spaces between March and May. The event is organized by non-profit Disjecta and curated by Cris Moss, gallery director at Linfield College.

Ucci’s installation, “I Want to Be a Lighthouse Keeper,” is a close focused, high-resolution video recording of a 5 mm thick rod of blue neon that has been sped up to reveal the fluctuating luminosity of the neon gas. An amplified recording of the electrical hum of the neon transformer sweeps across the room from a 360 degree soundbar. Ucci describes the work as a distilled, constructed view of a horizon line, filled with potential yet empty. Its motion is that of particles of light and their magnetic oscillation at the frequency of the alternating electrical current, she said.

Originally conceived in 2008, she was unable to show the actual neon she’d had manufactured because a gallery’s space in Delaware was interrupted by columns. “Because I was unable to show the work as intended, I decided to shoot the neon as a video, and I liked how the camera was able to capture the fluctuations in light. It was a happy accident.”

Though some of the Portland 2010 exhibits are group shows, the curator selected an individual exhibition space for Ucci’s video and sound installation due to its minimal quality.

Ucci will also contribute to an event-capping group show of Portland 2010 artists at the UO’s White Box in the White Stag Building from April 6 to 17. Ucci said she plans to include a second piece that exploits the visual properties of custom neon. The White Box, 24 NW First Ave., is open Tuesdays to Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. Admission is free.

Meriwether resident Nellie Kidd-Madison leads an Alzheimer’s disease support group for South Waterfront residents. Madison cared for her husband John for 15 years as he suffered from Alzheimer’s and wrote this compelling book called Living with John on how to care for a loved one with this disease. The group will meet informally once a month to help provide support to caregivers of those affected by Alzheimer’s.

As winter melts away into spring it’s time to begin planning our plots in the South Waterfront Community Garden. Last year the beds filled up quickly, so please be sure to fill out your application and return it to the Community Relations office as early as possible.  Garden plot applications are available in each building at the concierge desk.  Completed applications and checks can be turned in at the Community Relations office, Atwater Townhome #115, Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Also four members of the Multnomah Chapter of the Master Gardeners group will visit the Garden Meeting on March 16 to speak about starting the new gardens for 2010. They will speak on the following topics: soil, seeds, maintenance and secession. They’ll give a short presentation with plenty of time for questions and answers. The SWF Community Garden committee presents winter movie nights. A short film, “City of Cranes,” takes you hundreds of feet above the ground to hear the insights of crane drivers, and see a glimpse of the poetic, mesmerizing world of cranes. It is filmed in London and from the view point of the crane operator.

“Backyard Conversations,” is an investigation of place, space and community was filmed in the South Waterfront by local artist Linda Wysong. It includes interviews with residents of the SWF, cyclists, OHSU employees and the construction workers who offer their insights on the neighborhood and what it’s like to live and work in the SWF.

Professor David Barker will lead a discussion of epidemiology yesterday and today.  Inspired by the recent novel The Ghost Map , by Steven Johnson, which is the Multnomah County Library “Everybody Reads” book for 2010.  The book is set in the 1854 cholera epidemic in Victorian London and tells the story of how an adventurous scientist, Dr. John Snow, risked his life to create a map that demonstrated how cholera spread.  Come hear one of the world’s foremost experts on the early origins of chronic disease.

David Barker, MD, PhD is a Professor of Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University and Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Southampton.  In 1986 he put forward the “fetal origins hypothesis” which stated that coronary heart disease originates as a consequence of malnutrition during fetal life and infancy.  He showed the correlation between low birth weight and an increased lifetime risk of heart disease, obesity and type-2 diabetes.  Like Dr. Snow, Professor Barker used the geographic distribution of disease and maps as his tools to develop this hypothesis that has changed our understanding of the roots of disease.  Diseases that were once thought to begin near the time of their manifestation in adult life are now known to have roots in pre- and early post-natal life and, in some cases, in previous generations.

This exhibition features TERRARIUM, by Wesley Younie. Part natural history time capsule, part reflection on our relationship with nature today, Younie’s TERRARIUM invites us to explore a life size interpretative diorama. Inspired by historic wildlife that once inhabited the SW Willamette River valley, sculptor and painter Younie compares what life might have been to the human-centric South Waterfront community area that thrives there today. Juxtaposed with the architectural landscape of condo towers, retail spaces, parks and gardens, TERRARIUM reminds us that we are not the first to call this area home.

On Wednesday the City of Portland has put out a solicitation for design and engineering proposals for work to be done along Moody Ave, according to the DJC.  System Development Charges, along with federal funding would go towards improving the only northern entrance to the South Waterfront District.  Read the entire story at the DJC:

Learn about efforts to develop a transit project that meets future travel demand between Lake Oswego and Portland, supports local and regional land use plans, and garners public acceptance and community support.

The transit project is now preparing a Draft Environmental Impact Statement, studying the potential benefits and impacts of three alternatives in the corridor, a no-build option, enhanced bus service, and a streetcar extension. The environmental analysis examines the full range of direct, indirect and cumulative effects of the alternatives and is expected to be published for public review in summer 2010. Also, remember my print give away. I am putting three of my pictures in the windows of the AiR studio each week and the first three people who contact me, either by email or in person, can have a picture. You will need to come by the studio to see the pictures. That way you can identify which one you want. The first person gets their first choice, the second person their choice from the remaining two, etc. If you get one of the pictures, you will need to pick it up from me in person when the next set of pictures goes up the following week. Normally new pictures go up Monday evening or Tuesday morning.

Craig will be living in the John Ross, teaching at the University of Oregon White Stag Building and creating in the John Ross Plaza Studio. More details about his residency coming soon!

Craig Hickman has been teaching digital arts courses at UO for the past 25 years. His creative practice centers on photography, software development, artist’s books, and physical computing. In 1975 he, along with 4 other photographers, established Blue Sky Gallery in Portland. Blue Sky quickly gained a reputation for showing photographers in the early stages of their careers that later went on to become well known. Craig recently had his physical computing projects, called the Enigma Gadgets, featured in the popular Make Magazine Blog. Check out examples of his work at his web site, http://dryreading.com.

Jackilen Shannon, PhD, RD, Scientist, Center for Research on Environmental Toxicology and Associate Professor of Public Health & Preventive Medicine, Oregon Health & Science University, will discuss the evidence for a relationship between diet and risk of breast cancer, with specific focus on the current evidence for the role of fruits and vegetables, fat (total and individual fatty acids) and vitamin D in breast cancer prevention. HEIDI MCBRIDE GALLERY & ART CONSULTANCY launches about space, a new site-based installation program presented in cooperation with South Waterfront Community Relations and Atwater Place. The space is located in the Atwater Place Condominiums vacant commercial retail space and is only viewable from outside, except during the opening reception.

BLUEPRINTS, ANCHORS, AMBITIONS is Fae Young-Scherling’s response to the transitional nature of the space, a space of in-betweens – after building, before completion. Using string and concrete, Fae mimics the structural columns with contrasting intention, where one supports and bears weight, the other anchors and holds down.

Over the course of the exhibition, Fae will be spending time working and building upon the string constructed columns, adding weight, detail, attention and care, weaving her metaphors of time and being into the space itself.

‘about space’ is designed as a window gallery viewable from the outside, except during receptions and events.  It is located on the corner of SW Gaines & River Parkway.

I’m Paul Graham.  I made it rich several years ago selling a company to Yahoo!  I now spend my days thinking about problems, and publishing solutions to those problems.  I have been on stage many times but I have never been portrayed by an actor on stage.  At first, I had reservations, but I was pleased to find that an attractive, strapping man has been cast for my role.  So come on November 11th to hear him, oh..ah me, give a lecture on constructive disagreement requiring the evacuation of the theatre and cake for all.

Stay for the Cake is an all-original work written, directed, designed and performed by The Montgomery Street Players, Portland Actors Conservatory’s new alumni performance group. Each of the three slices skewer the creative process with sardonic hilarity and cake for all! PAC will present one slice of the Cake at South Waterfront: “I Am Paul Graham.” We’ve heard it’s delicious!

Portland Actors Conservatory has been providing quality stage productions to the greater Portland community for 24 years. The Conservatory gives student actors the opportunity to put acting theory into practice in weekly performance labs, public showcases and the Conservatory Season of Plays.

Did you ever wonder why you love (or don’t love) music?  Or how the brain recognizes music? Or if music can help the brain develop or improve healthy brain aging?  Dr. Larry Sherman, a musical neuroscientist at OHSU, offers answers to these questions as well as insights into some of the most exciting brain research in recent years – the connection between music, brain development and the ways music can prevent or delay brain aging.

In this multi-media performance, Dr. Sherman mixes musical performances, humor and neuroscience to reveal the amazing connection between music and human brain function.

Dr. Larry Sherman received his Ph.D. in Cell Biology from OHSU in 1993.  After three years of post-doctoral research at the Institut für Genetik in Karlsruhe, Germany, he joined the faculty at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.  He returned to Portland seven years ago and is now a Senior Scientist at the Oregon National Primate Research Center and a Professor in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at OHSU. He has over 60 publications in the areas of nervous system development, neurodegeneration, and neuro-oncology, with a focus on ways to promote the repair of brain white matter in patients with multiple sclerosis and during normal aging.  He has played piano since the age of four, and has been in numerous blues, rock and jazz groups.

Celebrate First Thursday with The Ardea! Begin the evening in the two-story penthouse, with live music and several fine Willamette Valley Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris wines to taste, matched with specialty cheeses.

This month the penthouse will again feature a selection of works from the Heidi McBride Gallery & Art Consultancy. Among the work featured this month will be a selection by Julio Marin Aleman. Also on display will be works by Portland artist Pam Flanders. Pam paints in oil, and many of her works are landscape, en plein air paintings. The combination of the movement of the brush over the canvas and the juiciness of the paint makes for an exhilarating experience for the viewer.

Art will be the topic of the evening, with maps to First Thursday gallery openings on hand as well as a list of the top exhibits showing in downtown and the Pearl District. You can hop on the Portland Streetcar, just out the front door to begin your tour.

For the lecture Ornamental Plant Breeding for the 21st Century, Gessert will discuss past and current uses of biotechnology to create new kinds of ornamental plants. Oregon is playing an important role in these efforts because of the red iris project, initiated by Cooleys Irises in Silverton. Engineered ornamentals such as the red iris raise many questions, but he will focus on just one: what aesthetic criteria or assumptions are shaping the new plants? Answers to this question suggest that the time is long overdue for ornamental plant breeding to beconsidered an art.

Lecture called Portland’s Urban Wild is a panel discussion featuring : Deborah Lev, Claire Puchy, Bob Sallinger, Lynn Barlow. All folks who have worked extensively for the betterment of Portland’s green spaces.

Driving around the district this week may seem a little different to everyone.  Over the weekend the Portland Buearu of Transportation implemented a few traffic changes in the district – including making Gaines street a 2 way street, the removal of stop signs from Moody Ave. and additional cautionary signs highlighting these changes.  Here is the official word from PBOT:

Changes in South Waterfront Traffic Circulation

The City of Portland’s Bureau of Transportation will make changes to South Waterfront traffic circulation in early October, 2009.  The work will address requests made by residents in the neighborhood and by the operators of the Portland Streetcar.

> All Way stops at SW Bond Ave and SW Curry St, SW Moody Ave and SW Curry St, and SW Moody Ave and SW Gaines St will be removed.  Gaines and Curry will still be stop controlled at Bond and at Moody
> SW Gaines and SW Curry will carry two way traffic between Moody and Bond.  Curry and Gaines between Macadam and Moody will remain one way.
> A Speed 25 sign will be added on SW Bond north of Bancroft.

These changes are expected to provide better access to, from and within the South Waterfront area.

This Friday my Machine in the Garden class were given a great tour of the SWF by Nicole Peterson. She spoke from the stand point of the ecological design that went into the planning process and from the prospective of a resident of SWF who cares deeply about the issues. It was a perfect introduction for students who will be using swf as a muse and an off campus site this term.

Here in the South Waterfront we will acknowledge the anniversary at Monday’s 20/20 Art Culture and Science meeting, where we celebrate SWF’s culture the first Monday of every month. We are featuring passionate and talented metal sculptor Mike Suri.

As an epi-center of emerging culture, I encourage SWF residents to learn more about the Oregon Cultural Trust and the opportunity to personally simulate Oregon’s investment in Culture, Humanities and Heritage…. We’re talking libraries, historic preservation, theatre, vibrant mainstreets, OPB, cultural centers, native Oregonian tribal culture, gardens, dance, operas, museums and more… Culture, not just for culture’s sake, but because it creates vibrant communities by strengthening the economy, improving education, and bettering our quality of life.

Ways to participate in The Oregon Day of Culture :

1. Attend the 20/20 ACS event or another dedicated event : Go to www.oregondayofculture.org hundreds of public and private events, statewide.

2. Plan an activity yourself that celebrates culture and brings awareness to the Oregon Cultural Trust as a vehicle for ‘voting’ for culture, humanities and heritage by giving Oregonians who donate a tax CREDIT.

3. Go to www.culturaltrust.org to learn more & donate. (There is no other integrated cultural funding mechanism that brings together the arts, historic preservation and heritage and the humanities).

The Oregon Cultural Trust awarded $1.45 Million in fiscal year 2010. Fueled by Oregonians who ‘voted with their dollar’ by contributing to the OCT and receiving a tax CREDIT, the funds are leveraged by recipients to produce some incredible results.

Mark of Old House of Dahlias will be selling dahlias every Friday, beginning Sept. 25, from 12 to 6 pm.  The South Waterfront dahlia stand will offer pre-cut dahlias, 10 stems for $7. 

There will also be a Dahlia Festival open house Saturday and Sunday from 10-5 at his Old House of Dahlias at 8005 S.E. Mill St. (between Stark and Division off 80th).

Who would have thought I could look out the window of my downtown condo and see a tractor plowing through a muddy field? Amazingly, I have the most incredible view of the Ross Island Bridge, the Willamette River, Zidel’s barge builders, the OHSU buildings and the Tram. Now I will get to see dahlia’s in bloom, thanks to Mark Harvey of Old House Dahlias.

Mark was living in Southeast Portland with his sister. She got married and  moved out, so he needed a source of income to be able to keep the home they bought together. He decided to grow dahlias. For two years he planted the flowers at his home until he decided to expand. He began planting the flowers in Corbett on a leased farm. He kept the dahlias as a display at home and sold the potted ones while raising tubers. From February of 2009 until the end of April, dahlia disasters keep happening: cuttings got too hot in his greenhouse, next he moved them outside and they got root rot. So he tried putting 75 flats in his garage, but there was not enough light for growth. Finally he began to look for a piece of urban land to plant his dahlia cuttings. He had a friend living in the South Waterfront who told him about the land right on the river. So he approached the developers to get their permission to lease the land until the housing market improves. Once he got permission to use the land, he began to grow the cuttings in his garage.

So one morning in May I look out my window and see a green tractor and two men, one wearing a cowboy hat. Being from Montana, I was curious and went down the elevator to introduce myself to this cowboy. It was Mark and his recruit… Dad, of course. His father, Dwight, told me that Mark just has it in his blood to be a farmer. His grandpa farmed in Nebraska. Mark is an environmentalist and worked for the Department of Fish and Wildlife for five years. Now he works during the week for his brother-in-law at Pacific Foods in Canby. But on the weekends, he becomes an urban farmer. His goal is to sell cut flowers in the fall.

The most recent Dahlia disaster came in June with temperatures in the 90’s. For the first time since I can remember, we were able to attend the Starlight parade with no umbrella or raincoat. Mark thought he had until July to solve the problem of not having an outlet to water his flowers. Dahlias are a kind of desert flower, however, Mark planted mostly cuttings and only a few tubers. It’s July now and half the field is finally green, the half with the tubers. The cuttings are still struggling a bit from the heat, but July 4th weekend Mark showed up with a water truck that he borrowed from his brother-in-law. For two days he patiently watered, talking to the condo residents and napping intermittently on the lawn. In September, the South Waterfront residents will all benefit from a field of dahlias in the midst of high-rise buildings, thanks to the persistence of an urban farmer! Grab your sunscreen and water wings, it’s time for the Ross Island Kayak Tour, led by Portland Kayak. First-time kayakers and experienced paddlers alike will enjoy a unique perspective of Portland on this guided tour circumnavigating Ross Island on the Willamette River. We’ll paddle past an impressive blue heron rookery and might spot bald eagles and osprey as we glide by Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge. There’s an unparalleled view of Portland’s skyline (including our own South Waterfront) on the way back to the dock. Cost is $25 per person for this normally $45-per-person tour. Here is a recent letter from Mike Houck of the Urban Greenspace Institute:

Thank you for you support to date for creating a No-wake Zone in the Holgate Channel and Ross Island Lagoon. Several hundred people have written letters in support of this effort, and more than 200 people showed up to support this effort at a hearing back in May. We have sent a strong message to the Oregon Marine Board that there needs to be one location along the entire Lower Willamette River that is set aside to protect wildlife and provide a safe place of canoeists and kayakers to enjoy nature.

The Marine Board will be making a final decision on the no-wak zone petition on Monday, July 27TH.

It is essential that we have a strong turnout at this hearing and there may be opportunities for public testimony.

The Marine Board may or may not take testimony.  However, they will be counting heads.  It’s critical that there be a big turn out for this hearing.  Please come and bring others who support a No Wake Zone for the Holgate Channel and Ross Island Lagoon.

A workshop will be held to discuss design aspects of the new Willamette River Bridge to be built in South Waterfront. The new bridge will span the river from South Waterfront to OMSI and serve as a vital component of the Portland-Milwaukie light rail line. It will carry light rail trains, buses, cyclists and pedestrians, and be able to accommodate streetcars.

This real-life performing experience helps foster a new generation of incredible musicians.

This fundraiser will feature jeweler to the stars Tom Sauve, who will offer a selection of custom pieces for sale. A portion of the proceeds will go to the PROWUS Scholarship fund for Portland School of Rock. Music will be provided by John English, who will perform his tribute to Frank Sinatra, and refreshments will be provided.

Over the summer the City will be reviewing the street plans for South Waterfront.  This was recently posted on PDOT’s website: South Waterfront District Street Plan

Residents attended one Open House on June 11 and provided the city input and it seems that many of the suggestions will be taken into consideration for a comprehensive plan for the district.

Imagine a revolution in chamber music, performed anywhere and everywhere. Classical Revolution PDX performs chamber music in non-traditional venues like bars and cafes, making it accessible to everyone. By taking chamber music out of the recital hall, Classical Revolution PDX strives to show the public that this music is relevant and can be enjoyed by all.

The revolution starts with the PDX BIKER SYMPHONY, part of Pedalpalooza, at South Park Blocks, SW Park Ave and SW College St (gather at the southern end of the South Park Blocks). The procession will travel down the South Park Blocks starting at 4:00 p.m. and move on to South Waterfront, where they will “rock” chamber music style. Musicians who want to join in are encouraged to bring their classical instruments.  Representatives from the Community Cycling Center will be on hand to provide information about their year-round bicycle service and support programs for low-income youth and adults.

Beer and pizza will be provided by Hopworks Urban Brewery and HOTLIPS Pizza.

An activist, consultant and educator, Cannon has been working in the Montessori method of education for over 20 years. The Right Brain Initiative seeks to achieve a measurable impact on learning by integrating the community’s arts and cultural resources into the education of every K-8 student in the region’s school districts. This collaboration among artists, educators, parents, business leaders, elected officials and philanthropists is working to develop a systemic and sustainable solution for providing arts learning opportunities for ALL children.

The residents of South Waterfront worked with Community Relations to plan and construct the garden this spring, resulting in 13 garden beds on the lot south of Atwater Place. The beds are completely full this year, but don’t despair. If you are a South Waterfront resident you can become a Friend of the Community Garden and help out. Hooray!  The Farmers Markets around Portland are beginning to open up and offer our region’s glorious bounty for our tables at home.  For those of us living here in the South Waterfront we have our pick of many different markets.  On Saturdays we can take the Portland Streetcar up to the South Park blocks for the PSU Farmer’s Market or on Wednesdays to the Downtown Market or on Thursdays we can go to the Ecotrust Market in the Pearl District.

Okay, this is (not) going to hurt. South Waterfront Community Relations and the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine present “More Than Just Needles: An Introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine.”

According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, an estimated 3.1 million U.S. adults had been treated with acupuncture the previous year. While acupuncture has become increasingly accessible and common, not everyone is familiar with the adjunctive therapies that traditional Chinese medicine has to offer. Practitioners use a combination of tools, including acupuncture, shiatsu, qigong, tuina and herbal medicine to gently adjust a patient’s specific physical and emotional imbalances.

Learn about the concept of qi, the vital energy that Chinese medicine seeks to balance, the differences between Chinese and Western approaches to health and what conditions Chinese medicine can best treat. One of OCOM’s licensed acupuncturists will provide sample treatments to interested participants. To help you relax, we will have sake tastings and light appetizers.

…….my itinerary is not in stone yet but I will travel to Brussels for a solo exhibition which opens May 28th.  I will be building a large styrofoam robot on site, and as usual, about half of the entire exhibition will be site specific.  There are several pieces being fabricated and its always a challenge to work in such a way overseas.  I work closely with this particular gallery, Think.21, who understands me and my work intimately enough to negotiate complex production methods – even when I am not there.  I develop drawings and plans, research production methods, and then they source the best fabricator.  “The guy doesn’t even make his own work?” true, in some cases, I seek a level of high production so technically specific it only makes sense to use professional technical crafts people.  I am sure we can find plenty of masters throughout history whom have had their work constructed by teams of assistants, but it does sound odd to some who still only understand art making as a craft exercise.  I am a maker and always will be, but in my practice I continue to believe I can and should use every media, method and technical advantage I can access.

The entry fee for this event is at least one piece of styrofoam. Salter is collecting styrofoam for his installation at South Waterfront (the kind of styrofoam you find when you unpack a computer or TV, appliances and sometimes furniture). Wine, appetizers and pop culture treats will be served.

Join Glumac President Steven Straus, Gerding Edlen Principal Mark Edlen, and artist Buster Simpson for the unveiling of the inaugural Earth Day Art sculpture by Buster Simpson.

The sculpture will be an artistic representation of the growing movement towards using more sustainable construction practices, a reflection of our collective concern for our environment and deep involvement in protecting the places where we work and live. The sculpture will be dedicated to a Portland resident who has lead the sustainable movement in our own back yard.

“Bows to Plows – Two Liberty Ship bow remnants, with massive holds of concrete, currently reside on the riverside awaiting disposal or new purpose. Placement of the hulls on the South Waterfront Greenway installs these artifacts as sentinels. Sculpturally, these elements represent the transfer and acceptance of gravity and the embrace of mass and suggest shipyard inventory either during their making or their dismantling along the Willamette River. The pair of hulls illustrates the new paradigm of sustainability and stand to remind us of the utility and grace of transforming ’swords into plowshares’ for the healing of the earth.”

Come to the South Waterfront tonight for 2 big art events.  The first at 5 PM is the unveiling of a rendition of the sculpture that will grace the greenway one the project is completed.  For more information, Click Here.

Then, after the sculpture viewing on the Greenway head over to the John Ross Plaza Studio for the Launch Event of the new Artist in Residence Program.

Our Artist in Residence is Michael Salter – world renown for his Styrobots.  His program begins at 6 PM – with a brief artists lecture at 6:30 PM. For more information, please Click Here. If you come to this event – please bring at least 1 piece of styrofoam to contribute to Michael’s sculpture.

We received word from Portland Parks & Rec this week about the status of the Greenway – please see the Project Manager’s message below:

Regarding the project schedule – As many of you realize, one of the causes for the project delay, was the discovery of soil contamination.  After lengthy discussions between the Department of Environmental Quality, property owners, Portland Development Commission and Portland Parks & Recreation,  its been agreed that some additional sampling work needs to be undertaken along the greenway.   This work is expected to start in May.

In addition to the information we gather from the soil samples – we will incorporate the feedback from the discussion between the City and National Marine Fisheries that took place in late 2008.  These two additional information sources will inform the projects design so that an updated permit application can be submitted to the Army Corp of Engineers and National Marine Fisheries Service.  We anticipate being able to submit the updated permit applications in November 2009.

In October 2009, we will invite the community to review the updated designs so that you know how the project may have been amended.
