• The Little Gnome Farm CSA is back for 2013! Little Gnome Farm, located in Ridgefield, WA, seeks to meet and exceed the letter of organic farming rules and biodynamic practices. Shares will be delivered for 25 weeks – June through Thanksgiving. Shares will be ready for pickup every Thursday at the Little Gnome Farm booth at the South Waterfront Farmers Market from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm, after which they will move to the South Waterfront Community Relations office for after hours and next morning pickup. The cost for the entire 25 weeks is $700 ($28/week).  20 weeks of one-dozen pastured egg shares can be added on for $100 ($5/dozen). As part of the South Waterfront’s EcoDistrict initiative, we are partnering with the Portland Sustainability Institute, the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, and a PSU engineering graduate student on a project to investigate ways the South Waterfront buildings can further reduce their energy usage.

The project is looking at current energy usage and investigating programs that would help us reduce that usage over time. The goal is to continue our commitments to sustainable living as a community.

This is our first EcoDistrict program, so please help us start it off right by participating in a survey that will help us better understand energy usage in our community.  The survey should take 7 minutes or less to complete.  Please click here to access the survey.

A book by Linfield College Professor Nicholas Buccola was nominated for one of Oregon’s highest literary honors, the Oregon Book Awards. Buccola and his wife Emily live in the South Waterfront.

The Political Thought of Frederick Douglass: In Pursuit of American Liberty has garnered praise for its relevancy and insight. The book highlights the life and ideas of Frederick Douglass, a self-taught slave who became one the most influential activists and orators of the 19th century. The abolitionist came to represent the conscience of a nation struggling with questions of race and equality. Sometimes called the “grandfather of the civil rights movement,” Douglass’ ideas had a profound influence on later leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr.

Buccola has published opinion columns and provided political commentary in regional and national newspapers and journals, including The Oregonian, Dallas Morning News, Baltimore Sun, Dissent magazine, and Reason magazine.

He teaches in the Department of Political Science.

South Waterfront Community Relations is gearing up for the opening of the 2013 South Waterfront Farmers Market. The market was a big success in its first year – vendors enjoyed steady business and residents and employees were brought together by delicious produce, prepared food, and live music.

2013 will see great expansion at the market, as we double in size from 15 up to 30 vendors! The market is also scheduled to increase to 6 full months, May through October, with new hours – 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm. This schedule will allow many employees of the district to stop in for lunch, while still keeping a wide range of hours for residents.

Sidonie Caron’s work reflects the profound connections between family, community, and society.  Infused with the sentiment of her personal travels, her insightful paintings depict such everyday scenes as waiting for a bus in Israel, or the façade of an old European synagogue. Her larger collages incorporate maps, photos, food wrappers, and newspaper clippings. These introspective works illuminate what it means for Caron to be an artist who is Jewish. A longtime resident of Portland, Caron hails from London, England, resides in the South Waterfront, and is represented in public and private collections throughout the world.

Dr. Slifka’s research, examining decades of data, suggests people have a physiological ceiling for vaccine immunity, which may argue for a shift in the current revaccination schedule for millions of Americans. It also indicates that the recent media hype about the danger of vaccinations, or their connection to autism and other disorders, is scientifically unfounded. His presentation will focus on what science tells us about vaccines to help you make an informed decision about vaccines for you and your children.

January and February are the start of a fresh new year, and for real estate in South Waterfront, this year is no exception. Repair work at The Meriwether is essentially done and litigation has been settled. A small group of South Waterfront building representatives has started a grassroots effort to develop coordinated plans for disaster preparedness in the South Waterfront. As the South Waterfront is a very densely populated and somewhat geographically isolated area, we will certainly have unique challenges in responding effectively to large scale events, such as earthquakes, floods, or acts of aggression. The better we can prepare and collaborate, the better situated we will be to take care of ourselves.

Accountability for being ready depends on all of us, and we will be relying on each other in a disaster! To help, the group is initiating efforts in educating about individual preparedness, supporting building planning, and coordinating area-wide response. Keep a lookout for surveys, events, meetings, and volunteer opportunities! The first outreach is a scheduled Oregon Red Cross individual preparedness presentation on January 7, see details below.

There are many volunteer opportunities available to support the group’s efforts. If you have Portland NET or ARES experience or have done other disaster planning, please contact the group. If you have never done any disaster preparedness work, but would like to be able to assist in such a situation, we would love to hear from you! Building representatives from Ardea, Riva, and Matisse are needed as well.

MetroMile, a company out of California, recently debuted a pay per mile insurance program to Oregon drivers. The insurance is targeted to car owners who use transit, biking, walking, or carpooling as a primary commute mode and who drive less than 10,000 miles a year. In comparison, the average car owner drives 13-15,000 miles a year.  The company bills users a monthly fee based on the number of miles driven. Estimates for insurance costs are between $30 and $40 a month, a 20-50% savings for most custumers, according to MetroMile.

MetroMile uses a device called the Metronome that plugs into a car’s  diagnostic port to track the number of miles users drive.  Customers can access their driving analytics on a personalized dashboard through the MetroMile website. For a free quote, visit MetroMile.com.

Whether you’re thinking about going car-free or just wanting to downsize vehicles (as many residents of the South Waterfront have done), donating your car is fast, easy, and includes free pick-up!  OHS is able to sell donated vehicles with great efficiency to provide over $400,000 annually to care for animals in need.

If you’d like to keep your giving local (VERY local) consider making a donation to support one of South Waterfront Community Relations’ popular summer programs:  Summer Concerts and Movies in the Park, coming up on its third year at Elizabeth Caruthers Park, is paid for entirely by donations from generous local businesses and residents like you. The South Waterfront Farmers Market, which celebrated its first year in 2012, is ready to get bigger and better for 2013! We need community support to pay for additional permitting and supplies to smooth the transition as we grow in size and bring an even greater variety of local fresh food to the market. South Waterfront residents Eric and Ronna Hoffman and their extended families are making an impact by partnering with Habitat for Humanity to build a Portland home for the Llamo family. After gathering the $75,000 that Habitat needs to build a home, the family has volunteered on the build site while getting to know the future homeowners they are helping. • Letting Fido run free – responsibly.  South Waterfront is home to the South Waterfront Dog Club, the District’s only off-leash area for dogs.  Managed by community members, maintenance of this dog park is paid for by reasonable annual member dues:  South Waterfront Dog Club.  The nearest City-managed off-leash area is located at Willamette Park, a half hour walk or 5 minute drive to the south:  Willamette Park Off Leash Area.

Sounds easy, right? That’s because it is!  Take the Portland Parks & Recreation pledge so that you and your dog can both say, “I’m for the environment!” Get your pledge form and information at:  Dogs for the Environment. Fill it out, send it to the address listed, and Portland Parks will send a bright green Dogs for the Environment bandanna for your dog to proudly sport around town.

Violations of the poop-scooping and leash laws may result in a $150 fine.  If you notice violations at specific times of day/locations within the South Waterfront, feel free to call 503-823-DOGS to let Portland Parks know.

Gelato Maestro: Isn’t gelato just the Italian word for ice cream?  Yes and no. Gelato, in Italian, literally means ‘frozen’, so it is the word that Italians use for this frozen treat but it is so much more than ice cream!

First, gelato is lower in fat than ice cream.  Ice cream must contain at least 10% butterfat in order to be called ‘ice cream’.   Premium ice cream can be as much as 20% fat.  Gelato, on the other hand, runs between 4 and 8% butterfat. In addition to containing less fat, the absence of fat coating your tongue allows you to enjoy the taste more.

Secondly, gelato has less air pumped in (known as overrun). Ice creams can have over 50% overrun.  Gelato, made in small batches, tends to be less than 35% overrun.  What does this mean? Gelato is more dense, so a smaller portion should satiate even the most demanding sweet tooth.

Finally, gelato should be served at a slightly higher temperature than ice cream.  Not only do you potentially avoid ‘brain freezes’ but, again, your tongue is able to better sense the taste of the gelato.

In addition to milk-based gelato, the lactose-free, fat-free version is known as sorbetto.  Sorbetto is made using fresh fruit, fruit juice, and a simple syrup. Most any fruit (and even some vegetables!) can be made into sorbetto.

During the holiday season, Gelato Maestro is preparing many of the traditional ‘winter time’ flavors including torrone (almond nougat), amaretto, cinnamon, malaga (rum raisin) as well as year round favorites like chocolate, hazelnut, nutella, and vanilla.  Surprise your guests with a scoop of pumpkin pie gelato or fat-free apple pie sorbetto!

Thanks to the combined efforts of many individuals and community, business, and City of Portland groups, there is now a permanent location for the osprey platform and nest in the new South Waterfront Greenway. On November 16, Portland Parks & Recreation relocated the 8-ton steel platform and pole (fabricated by Zidell Marine Co. especially for the osprey) to its new location along the banks of the Willamette River, just 200 feet from its prior location.

We look forward to welcoming the ospreys to their permanent home in March 2013, when they return from a 3,000 mile migration to Mexico. It is likely that the KGW Audubon Osprey Cam will continue to broadcast in 2013.

The nest is registered as Nest #304 at the Center for Conservation Biology Osprey Nest Watch: www.ospreywatch.org.  A history of the nest is located there, at www.KGW.com, as well as in the “about” section of the Osprey Society Facebook page – where you can also post your own observations and photos! Starting Sunday, December 2, 2012, Portland Streetcar will be changing its South Waterfront layover stop from the OHSU Plaza to SW Lowell and Bond (by Gray’s Landing).  This means that the streetcar will no longer idle for extended periods at the base of the tram.

Presented by Melissa Wong, Ph.D., associate professor of dermatology and cell and developmental biology in the OHSU School of Medicine, researcher in the Oregon Stem Cell Center, and member of the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute.

While recent advances in cancer treatment are saving lives, there has been frustratingly little progress made on treating the metastatic spread of disease – the last and least understood phase of cancer progression. Dr. Wong’s goal is to track down and stop cancer cells before they turn deadly. Her research has pointed her toward an intriguing mechanism for explaining how cancer cells gain the ability to circulate to other sites in the body. Dr. Wong’s presentation will focus on the search for the elusive triggers that spark cancer cells’ aggressive behavior and explain how this information may help shape new life-saving treatments for late-stage cancer.

It’s that time of year to roll the clocks back again! On Sunday, November 4, we “fall back” into darker, rainier months. However, we want to encourage all those walking and biking to and from the South Waterfront to be safe. With the days getting darker, we want you to become brighter as you walk and bike around town. Some helpful tips:

• Use lights on yourself or your bike.
• Wear lighter clothing. Stay away from darks, and brighten up the winter.
• Check out reflective accessories – armbands, pant leg bands, reflective stickers, and umbrellas.
• Light up your furry friend – Don’t forget to put a light or reflective vest on your pup for evening/morning walks.

Fact: Drivers can first see you from 500 feet away if you are wearing reflective clothing; but only from 55 feet if you are in dark clothes.

Fact: More than half of the pedestrians killed in Oregon in 2010 were wearing dark clothing and walking at night or in low-light hours.

• Temptress Truffles- Fall mushroom hunting season is a big deal in Oregon -  this is the magical time when our state mushroom, the Pacific Golden Chanterelle, is ready to harvest! To ring in the fall harvest season, Temptress Truffles hosts an annual Fall Mushroom Hunt, taking place this year on Saturday, October 27.  Information about this event as well as other wild harvest educational offerings such as truffle hunting and dog training can be found online at www.temptresstruffles.com, www.facebook.com/temptresstruffles, and www.twitter.com/oregontruffles.

  During the winter months you can also find Temptress Truffles at the PSU Farmers Market every Saturday until December 15.

Tamara Phillips, Ph.D., professor of behavioral neuroscience in the OHSU School of Medicine and a senior research career scientist at the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center, presents this lecture.  Why do some people become addicted to drugs like alcohol, while others don’t? What if we could identify the genes that predispose some people to be attracted to drugs or alcohol?  OHSU scientists are studying the compelling effect of drug and alcohol use, which, like cake or sex, causes some people to increase activities to get more drugs. They hope to unravel the mystery of how – and why – this compulsion develops.

The Portland Streetcar is excited to open its newest line, the Central Loop, on Saturday, September 22. The festivities will start at 10:00 am with a press event and speeches at the OMSI Plaza in SE Portland, followed by the opening of the new line by 11:00 am. The Central Loop will connect with the existing streetcar on 10th & 11th in Downtown Portland. From there it will cross the Broadway Bridge traveling along Broadway, Weidler, 7th, MLK and Grand connecting to the Rose Quarter, Lloyd Center, the Oregon Convention Center, the Central Eastside Industrial District and OMSI. This is the first streetcar project in the country to be funded with a Federal Grant and includes new vehicles made by United Streetcar located in Clackamas, Oregon.

The South Waterfront Nature & Greenspaces Committee has teamed up with SOLVE and the Portland Streetcar to lead a beach and riverside clean up on Saturday, September 22, as part of the Get in the Loop celebration. The Streetcar will be free to all passengers Saturday and Sunday, September 22 and 23, in celebration of the new line.

We will meet at South Waterfront Community Relations, take the new bridge into the Lair Hill neighborhood and traverse a series of historic stairways to climb up to OHSU (with the choice of Tram or stairs for the return trip), stopping in at the OHSU Farmers Market for lunch.

This walk is approximately 2.25 miles round trip and includes many stairs and hills.

Did you know that Go By Bike (the bike valet and repair service at the base of the Portland Aerial Tram) also does hourly, daily, and weekly bike rentals? I did not, until mid-August, when I decided to take one of their rentals for a weekend spin.  They have a fantastic lineup of bike types that cover just about every biking need, including:

• Brompton Folding Bike – (this was the bike I rented, pictured above on the Banks-Vernonia Trail) these bikes look different, and people will take notice.  While out on the Brompton, I received such comments as, “Wow!”, “Cool! How do you like riding that?”, and “Awesome bike!!”  It folds easily to fit in the back seat or trunk of your car, rides superbly, and has 8 gears.
• Breezer Uptown – Smooth sailing town bike.
• Cetma Cargo Bike – Front loading cargo bike, good for hauling groceries, dogs, you name it.
• Surly Crosschecks – Great for commuting, touring, or whatever you want to throw at it.

Rates are very reasonable:

1 Day (must be returned by 6:45 of that day) – $20
1 Week – $70

There are all kinds of reasons to rent a bike – Want to take part in September’s Bike Commute Challenge, but don’t have your own ride? In the market for a new bike and want to get a serious test ride on some of the best bikes out there? Have guests coming from out of town who want to bike around the area? Speaking of weekend getaways, the getaway in question was to an absolutely fantastic, rural, bike-centric inn – the Coastal Mountain Sporthaus in Vernonia, Oregon (pictured above). Inspired by cycling trips to Northern Italy, owners Glen and Sandy Crinklaw created their inn to capture the warmth and relaxed atmosphere found in the Italian countryside. Located on a grassy hill overlooking a pastoral view of Piedmontese cows grazing contentedly in the meadow, a stay in one of the inn’s four guestrooms includes fresh (and mostly locally sourced) breakfast, lunch, and dinner with beer/wine, as well as a complimentary morning yoga class. We had smuggled in some of our own snacks and wine, but never touched them – Sandy even packed a tasty sack lunch for our day of biking the nearby Banks-Vernonia Trail, after which we soothed our tired muscles in the wonderful outdoor soaking pool and listened to the silence.

If you are up to the challenge of arriving at the Sporthaus by bike (a 48-mile ride from the South Waterfront) you will receive 10% from your already reasonably priced stay ($125 per person, per night).

Whatever your adventure, just go… by bike!

Check out Old House Dahlias one-acre field of dahlias near the Meriwether in the South Waterfront! This u-cut flower field will be open on Fridays 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm and Saturdays 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, Aug 24 until frost 2012, located at SW River Park Way and SW Curry Street. September 1 is right around the corner, and that’s when you’ll notice some big changes to the fare system:

This September, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) starts up their annual Bike Commute Challenge (BCC). For all those commuting from or to the South Waterfront, this is a great program to sign up for. The BCC is a fun way to count your bike commute trips and gives you a chance to win some amazing prizes. There are so many benefits to biking (especially in the glorious Oregon summer).

Any Oregon or SW Washington workplace of any size can take the Bike Commute Challenge. And since this is a friendly, free competition, any employee can play.

Over the next year, the South Waterfront greenway(from SW Gaines to SW Gibbs) will be under construction. The project site will be fenced off to the public as excavators continue to work along the bank.  The end result is projected to be stunning, with separated bike and pedestrian lanes. The project has been a long time in the making and there are bound to be a number of questions as we move forward.

On Tuesday, August 28, Portland Parks and Recreation will host an informal tour of the Greenway from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm, meeting at South Waterfront Community Relations. Please attend and bring your questions about the greenway.

Traffic in the South Waterfront area will be impacted the week of Aug. 13 by the delivery of 16 massive girders as part of the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Transit Project. This is the second of three sets of deliveries for the 1,730 foot long Harbor Structure. The 40+ ton girders being delivered are fabricated in Tigard by Fought & Company and individually transported to SW Moody Avenue.

The Gibbs Steet Bridge will open to the public in early July before a Grand Opening celebration with Mayor Sam Adams and former Rep. Darlene Hooley on Saturday, July 14. The festivities will run from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and include an opening ceremony, tours, and free Tram rides all day. Mark your calendars and plan on attending!

In the meantime, final construction work continues. This work includes the installation of closed circuit security cameras that will monitor both the bridge and the Portland Aerial Tram tower.

July will be a very busy month for the Harbor Structure.

The biggest news is that Sheridan Street will be CLOSED from July 16 to August 13, 2012.

As you can see in the image to the left of the Harbor Structure girders at their fabrication site at Fought & company in Tigard, these girders are BIG.  They are scheduled to be delivered the week of July 23.

When the girders are bolted together, the noise may be rather loud. All the bolting activity will happen from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm from Monday through Friday.

Here are a couple of highlights from the past week or so of work – It is a bit mundane, but you may be interested in what it took to get construction up and running.  Here is a snapshot:

• Working with PGE to get electricity to the construction trailer;
• Working with the Water Bureau to get water to the construction trailer;
• Having the US Department of Agriculture survey the existing shrubs, trees and brambles to determine if there were any native bird nests (there weren’t);
• Installing a rock construction entrance with a wheel wash – they literally wash the truck wheels before they go onto the neighborhood streets;
• Completing the waste handling permits for disposal of the lightly contaminated soils at either Hillsboro or Tigard facilities, depending on the level of contamination;
• Widening the existing path so that it can serve as the haul road up and down the site;
• Finalizing the Building Permit; and
• Finalizing the In Water Work permit that will allow us to do the beach work

Safety

• Safety training for all workers and project managers
• No accidents or near misses

Erosion Control – The goal of this is to keep the dirt where we want it and not in the river, the air or on the neighborhood streets

• Dust control – watering the dirt to keep dust down on days when it doesn’t rain;
• Silt Fencing and Straw Wattles – a line of cloth and long rolls of straw,  placed between the construction and the river to keep sediments out of the water.

Water Levels – We continue to closely monitor the water levels – the cool, wet June has left us two weeks behind a normal water level.  This means the water level today is what it would normally have been two weeks ago.  Portions of the construction depend on the water level dropping.

Work hours are 7:00 am – 5:00 pm Mon – Fri.  This may vary as the project moves forward.

The Portland Parks & Recreation website – www.portlandparks.org is the place to go for accurate and up to date information on the progress of the project.  We know that construction is inconvenient, messy and sometimes dangerous.  By providing accurate and timely information, we will do our best to let you know what to expect.

In early July, the courtyard of the Meriwether (the common space between the two towers) is scheduled for construction to repair drainage issues. The Meriwether HOA, in coordination with Portland Parks and Recreation, City Commissioner Nick Fish, and other parties, have worked together to find homes for many of the beautiful plants and vegetation in the courtyard. This is a wonderful collaboration between the South Waterfront community and the City of Portland.

Each weekend of activities during “Get to Know the Tram” month is organized around a theme. They include:

• Engineering and Development, June 9-10, will explore how the Tram works and what the future holds for the South Waterfront District.
• Biking and Hiking, June 16-17, will help Portland’s weekend warriors know where to go, what to see, and how the Tram can play a part in their adventures.
• Arts and the Tram, June 23-24, will feature an exhibit of work by local painters, filmmakers, and photographers who have been inspired by the Tram. Ritz Camera will also conduct free photography classes, which can be found at RitzCamera.com.
• Family Fun Weekend, June 30-July 1, will include activities and guests co-hosted by the Portland Children’s Museum.

Parkways! Have you been to one yet? Have you heard about it?  Presented annually by Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT), the family friendly bike rides showcase different neighborhoods and encourage folk to get on their bikes on closed-off (meaning no cars!) roads.  Food, drinks, and entertainment line the courses and the neighborhoods become instant block parties – watch out for kids with water guns!

ZRZ Realty is proposing a seven-story mixed-use apartment project for its lot at the corner of Southwest Moody Avenue and Grover Street. The 118-unit building would seek to attract OHSU workers and students.

The Zidell family, which owns 33 acres on both sides of the Ross Island Bridge along the Willamette River’s west bank, said the project would “set the tone for future projects” within South Waterfront.

Besides housing, the building could accommodate two restaurants and four other retailers.

The plan will be presented to the Portland Design Commission on June 7. If all goes as planned, construction will begin in August and the building could be completed by mid-June 2013.

In late March 2012, a new car-sharing company made its mark in Portland. Car2Go offers a new twist on conventional car-sharing models and brings a unique fleet of cars to the streets of Portland. A subsidiary of the truck-maker Daimler North America, Car2Go leases its Smart Cars to customers by the minute, and unlike its competitors, Car2Go allows users to simply drop the car in any legal parking space within a 34-square-mile area of the city.

Nellie Madison is a native Oregonian and returned from her eastern Oregon ranch to Portland three years ago to live in the South Waterfront.  She considers herself a colorist, as she enjoys the blending of inks, watercolors, oils, acrylics, and encaustics.  Nellie will continue to refresh the exhibit with new works as pieces are purchased, so stop by to see what’s new!  Her book, Living With John, Caring for a Loved One with Alzheimer’s Disease, is also available for purchase.

Located in Oregon City, the farm raises all of their vegetables, herbs, and fruit without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides.  They also offer free-range eggs, pastured chicken and turkey, and raw cow’s milk herd-shares.  One of the beautiful things about the program is the option to choose what you want delivered each week, or you can opt for their more traditional CSA basket option.

The Portland Parks & Recreation website – www.portlandparks.org is also the place to go for accurate and up to date information on the progress of the project.  We know that construction is inconvenient, messy, and sometimes dangerous, but by providing accurate and timely information, we hope that we can at least let you know what to expect.  Thanks in advance for your patience!

Update – April 30, 2012
We continue to work with the contractor to finalize the construction details.  This is quite an undertaking for a project of this scope and the devil is truly in the details.

While the permits were submitted some time ago, we continue to work through details with the Army Corp of Engineers and Bureau of Development Services to provide additional information and clarification on the project.  We anticipate receiving the permits in June. Once the permits are in-hand, we can work with the contractor to begin staging.

We continue to closely monitor the Willamette’s water level.  It is essential that the water level be within a specific range to allow us to begin the riverbank work.  Water levels depend on a number of factors (all of which we have no control over) which include:  rainfall, upstream dam releases, temperatures, and tides.  Working with a team from a variety of disciplines, we are watching and hoping to predict when the level will be low enough to begin work.  This is an inexact science.  And, on other topics…

Project staff met with Mark from Old House Dahlias to make sure the farm and the construction projects were not in conflict.  AND – the osprey are back!  Happily remodeling their cozy and familiar home…

Next Update – More information on the construction schedule and how it will affect residents and businesses.  And finally – We are planning to have a public meeting to give everyone a chance to talk face to face and ask questions.  That meeting is planned for May 22,  6:00 pm – 7:00 pm, location to be determined.
