South Waterfront Live Well Series: Ross Island Kayak Tour

Grab your sunscreen and water wings, it’s time for the Ross Island Kayak Tour, led by Portland Kayak. First-time kayakers and experienced paddlers alike will enjoy a unique perspective of Portland on this guided tour circumnavigating Ross Island on the Willamette River. We’ll paddle past an impressive blue heron rookery and might spot bald eagles and osprey as we glide by Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge. There’s an unparalleled view of Portland’s skyline (including our own South Waterfront) on the way back to the dock. Cost is $25 per person for this normally $45-per-person tour. There are only a few spots left, so RSVP to Community Relations early; payment in advance is required to hold your spot. Please indicate if you would like to reserve a single or double kayak. The tour will launch from River Place Marina.

Willamette River Bridge Design Forum

A Bridge Design Forum will be held to discuss design aspects of the new Willamette River Bridge to be built in South Waterfront. The new bridge will span the river from South Waterfront to OMSI and serve as a vital component of the Portland-Milwaukie light rail line. It will carry light rail trains, buses, cyclists and pedestrians, and be able to accommodate streetcars.

School of Rock Fundraiser at Ardea

Join the residents of The Ardea for a charity fundraiser to benefit Portland School of Rock, which helps students realize their potential as artists by giving them the opportunity to perform on stage in front of an audience. This real-life performing experience helps foster a new generation of incredible musicians.

This fundraiser will feature jeweler to the stars Tom Sauve, who will offer a selection of custom pieces for sale. A portion of the proceeds will go to the PROWUS Scholarship fund for Portland School of Rock. Music will be provided by John English, who will perform his tribute to Frank Sinatra, and refreshments will be provided.

Classical Revolution PDX & Pedalpalooza Bicycle Symphony

Imagine a revolution in chamber music, performed anywhere and everywhere. Classical Revolution PDX performs chamber music in non-traditional venues like bars and cafes, making it accessible to everyone. By taking chamber music out of the recital hall, Classical Revolution PDX strives to show the public that this music is relevant and can be enjoyed by all.

The revolution starts with the PDX BIKER SYMPHONY, part of Pedalpalooza, at South Park Blocks, SW Park Ave and SW College St (gather at the southern end of the South Park Blocks). The procession will travel down the South Park Blocks starting at 4:00 p.m. and move on to South Waterfront, where they will “rock” chamber music style. Musicians who want to join in are encouraged to bring their classical instruments. Representatives from the Community Cycling Center will be on hand to provide information about their year-round bicycle service and support programs for low-income youth and adults.

Beer and pizza will be provided by Hopworks Urban Brewery and HOTLIPS Pizza.

Join University of Oregon/South Waterfront Artist in Residence Michael Salter for the final reception and unveiling celebration of his installation FLOTSAM. The result of a 10-week residency at South Waterfront, the installation includes site sculptures, drawings and site-specific painting. Refreshments will be served.

“The random floating debris encountered in the open ocean is referred to as flotsam. I imagine our visual culture to be a sea. A sea filled with flotsam so thick and dangerous that navigating through it is treacherous. Imagine the things we see are bumped into, sometimes even attaching themselves to us, clinging to our consciousness. The work in this show is synthesized - visual - flotsam.”

Guest David Cannon discusses the ends and outs of Montessori schooling, a child-centered alternative educational method, and reports on the initiative to bring a Montessori classroom to the South Waterfront.

An activist, consultant and educator, Cannon has been working in the Montessori method of education for over 20 years. Among other accomplishments, he played a key role in obtaining approval of the first Montessori-based charter school in the Portland area, has served as head of several schools and participated on numerous boards, including the Board of Directors for Oregon Montessori Association.

Grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles and students of our world today will learn something relevant about human development, education and life. All SWF residents are welcome and guaranteed not to leave the meeting with any to-dos (unless you desire them).

More Than Just Needles: An Introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine

Okay, this is (not) going to hurt. South Waterfront Community Relations and the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine present “More Than Just Needles: An Introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine.”

According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, an estimated 3.1 million U.S. adults had been treated with acupuncture the previous year. While acupuncture has become increasingly accessible and common, not everyone is familiar with the adjunctive therapies that traditional Chinese medicine has to offer. Practitioners use a combination of tools, including acupuncture, shiatsu, qigong, tuina and herbal medicine to gently adjust a patient’s specific physical and emotional imbalances.

Learn about the concept of qi, the vital energy that Chinese medicine seeks to balance, the differences between Chinese and Western approaches to health and what conditions Chinese medicine can best treat. One of OCOM’s licensed acupuncturists will provide sample treatments to interested participants. To help you relax, we will have sake tastings and light appetizers.

Right Brain Initiative

The Right Brain Initiative seeks to achieve a measurable impact on learning by integrating the community’s arts and cultural resources into the education of every K-8 student in the region’s school districts. This collaboration among artists, educators, parents, business leaders, elected officials and philanthropists is working to develop a systemic and sustainable solution for providing arts learning opportunities for ALL children.

The Right Brain Initiative will be hosting an open house here in the South Waterfront at the end of May for the public to view the various art projects that have been produced over the past year through the initiative.

And about the vodka… Elemental Organic Vodka will be available for tasting, not mixed, but straight up. It’s made from scratch with organic Pacific Northwest white wheat, utilizing 100% wind-power energy, and cut with pure Bull Run Water. Unveiling of the South Waterfornt Greenway Sculpture

Join Glumac President Steven Straus, Gerding Edlen Principal Mark Edlen, and artist Buster Simpson for the unveiling of the inaugural Earth Day Art sculpture by Buster Simpson.

The sculpture will be an artistic representation of the growing movement towards using more sustainable construction practices, a reflection of our collective concern for our environment and deep involvement in protecting the places where we work and live. The sculpture will be dedicated to a Portland resident who has lead the sustainable movement in our own back yard.

“Bows to Plows - Two Liberty Ship bow remnants, with massive holds of concrete, currently reside on the riverside awaiting disposal or new purpose. Placement of the hulls on the South Waterfront Greenway installs these artifacts as sentinels. Sculpturally, these elements represent the transfer and acceptance of gravity and the embrace of mass and suggest shipyard inventory either during their making or their dismantling along the Willamette River. The pair of hulls illustrates the new paradigm of sustainability and stand to remind us of the utility and grace of transforming ’swords into plowshares’ for the healing of the earth.”

Join Linda K. Johnson, the former curator of the South Waterfront Artist in Residence program, for a party to assemble and release the official AiR Catalogue. This comprehensive document is a 36-page, full-color catalogue that includes an introductory essay by Johnson, statements from each of the guest artists and a DVD of performance and video-based projects. The catalogues are not available for sale. However, during this release and assembly party—while supplies last—anyone who joins in on the simple assembly of twenty catalogues may take one home.

Whether or not you participate in the catalogue assembly, you are welcome to attend this celebratory event where Johnson and the AiR program’s guest artists will be present. There will also be food, drinks and an ongoing slideshow featuring work from the AiR program

South Waterfront Neighborhood Park - Open House

Come learn how the Neighborhood Park design has been refined to reflect community comments on four early design concepts. This open house is your opportunity to give input on the preferred design. Design Team and Project staff will be on hand to answer your questions.

As one of the first parks and open spaces to be developed in the district, the design of this park will help set the tone for new development in the South Waterfront District. Bounded by SW Moody, Bond, Curry and Gaines Streets, the 2-block Neighborhood Park will provide a public place where area residents, workers and the community can enjoy recreational and social activities in the heart of the District.

The preferred design drawings, open house presentation and comment form will be available online starting April 22. Visit www.portlandparks.org and look under What’s New on the home page. The deadline to submit comments on the preferred design is May 2, 2008.

Sam Adams and Sho Dozono Forum

Join us at the Discovery Center for a special South Waterfront forum with mayoral candidates Sho Dozono and Sam Adams.

Please submit questions for the candidates in advance by emailing jeremy@southwaterfront.com. The deadline for questions is March 26th. The top ten questions will be posed by moderator John Horvick. An open Q&A will be held the last 15 minutes of the forum.

John Horvick is the project director for the Parents and Children Together study at Oregon Health & Science University . Horvick graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology. Horvick is currently a co-chair of City Club of Portlandâ€™s New Leaders Council and has served on several research study committees. Outside of the Club, he is a volunteer with Portland â€™s neighborhood mediation program.
