South Waterfront Architecture Series

To ensure aesthetic diversity in South Waterfront, a number of local, nationally-recognized architects were selected to design the area’s buildings. From Thomas Hacker’s soulful modernism, to Robert Thompson’s modern obelisk and Steve Domreis’s sleek curves, these architects have contributed their visions to the neighborhood, creating a rich experience. All of the designs share the common goal of preventing urban sprawl by concentrating resources and minimizing impact on the land through the reduced footprint of high rise buildings.

A 1953 African Road Trip Anticipates the Shape of Things to Come

August 23, 2011

A 1953 African Road Trip Anticipates the Shape of Things to Come

Irene Tinker wrote a memoir of her experiences driving through colonial Africa as the countries were demanding independence.  She interviewed administrators and politicians: British, African, East Indian, and Arabs; and talked to bartenders and servants.  While she typed on a portable Olivetti, her husband kept the small British car in working order.  They encountered flash floods and shiftas, elephants and ostriches.  Tinker utilized the knowledge gained in her career as a professor and international development activist.  Irene will speak about her fascinating experiences at Mirabella on the fourth Tuesday of August.  For more information about Irene, visit http://irenetinker.com/.
